Large Sebenza 2011 Edition: The Workbench Wenge
This Large Sebenza 2011 Edition is in mint, preowned condition. The wood in the handle is not regular material. It was salvaged from Chris Reeve’s original workbench in South Africa, from the years before the company moved to Boise in 1989.
Collectors know this run as the Workbench Wenge. The Certificate of Authenticity is signed and dated November 1, 2011. Moreover, the original box label names the edition and both inlay metals. This one came from a collection of preowned knives stored in a climate-controlled environment.
Wenge, Wire-Brushed by Hand
Wenge is a dense African hardwood. It is heavy, dark, and strongly grained. Chris Reeve chose it for the final Annual because of where this particular wood had been.
The shop wire-brushed each inlay before fitting it. That process cuts away the softer wood between the grain lines and leaves the harder rings standing proud. Consequently, the surface has real texture you can feel, not a printed pattern. Deep chocolate and near-black tones run the full length of the handle.
Inlays sit in pockets machined into both titanium scales. The fit is tight enough that the seams read as single lines. Furthermore, no one can make more of this wood, which is exactly why provenance carries so much weight on this edition.
18k Gold and Argentium Silver Set Into the Grain
Round inlays of 18 karat gold and Argentium silver are set flush into the wenge. Gold reads warm and yellow. Silver reads bright and cool. Together they scatter light across the dark grain.
Argentium is a modern sterling alloy. It replaces some of the copper in traditional sterling with germanium. As a result, it stays brighter and resists tarnish far better than standard silver. That matters on a knife meant to sit in a collection for decades.
A gold thumb lug and gold-toned hardware carry the theme onto the frame. Pieces at this level regularly appear among the most valuable custom knifemakers we track.
S30V Blade at 58 to 59 RC
The Large Sebenza 2011 Edition runs a hand-satin CPM S30V drop point blade. Crucible developed S30V with Chris Reeve’s input, and it defined the shop’s output for years.
The Certificate of Authenticity records 58 to 59 RC. Reeve favored moderate hardness on purpose. Therefore the edge stays tough and comes back quickly on a stone. Our knife knowledge library covers how S30V compares to modern steels.
The reverse scale carries the IDAHO MADE stamp. Meanwhile, the show-side frame is engraved with the Chris Reeve mark and the year 2011.
The Final Year of the Annual Sebenza
Chris Reeve released an Annual Sebenza every year from 1999 through 2011. Each year brought a different handle material. Buckeye burl, desert ironwood, snakewood, mammoth ivory, spalted maple, camphor, and more.
2011 closed the series. Furthermore, it is the only year that paired wood with precious metal inlays rather than letting the grain stand alone. That makes it the bookend of a thirteen-year run, and one of the most sought-after folding knives Chris Reeve ever released.
Large Sebenza 2011 Edition Condition and What’s Included
The knife is mint and preowned. It presents as unused. There are no snail trails on the blasted titanium, no blade play, and no sharpening. Additionally, the wenge is tight with no chips, and every gold and silver inlay sits bright and flush.
It ships complete. You receive the original white Chris Reeve box, the signed Certificate of Authenticity dated November 1, 2011, the blue Chris Reeve microfiber cloth, the Allen wrench, the brown leather slip sheath, the caution card, and the factory sticker. Read how we grade before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where did the wood on the Large Sebenza 2011 Edition come from?
It was salvaged from Chris Reeve’s original workbench in South Africa, before the move to Boise. Collectors call the run the Workbench Wenge. Therefore the supply was finite from the start, and it cannot be replaced.
What is Argentium silver?
Argentium is a modern sterling alloy that swaps some copper for germanium. Consequently it is brighter than standard sterling and far more resistant to tarnish.
Why does the wood feel textured?
The shop wire-brushed each inlay by hand before fitting it. That removes softer wood between the grain lines and raises the harder rings. As a result, the surface has genuine relief rather than a smooth polish.
Is the Large Sebenza 2011 Edition still available new?
No. The Annual series ended with 2011, and the material cannot be replaced. Accordingly, the secondary market is the only source.
How do you verify authenticity?
We check hardware, machining, stamps, and factory paperwork against known references. In addition, we photograph every marking before listing. Questions are welcome on our FAQs page.
