Miroc Razor Knife OTF Automatic Custom in Brass and Abalone
The Miroc Razor Knife OTF Automatic Custom is a brass-chassis utility knife that fires like an automatic. The scale is abalone. It runs 4.25 inches open and 3 inches closed, at 3.3 ounces. Condition is new, direct from the maker.
The thing that separates it from every other knife on this site is the blade. It takes a Stanley 1992 standard utility razor blade, the same one sold in hardware stores by the hundred, and this one is laser etched.
That is the whole proposition. Consumable edge, permanent object. When the blade dulls you replace it for pennies and the knife you are holding is unaffected.
A Utility Blade in an Automatic Chassis
A box cutter is the least romantic tool in a drawer. Miroc’s answer was to keep the blade and rebuild everything around it.
Deployment is by a side button, and the blade drives out the front rather than pivoting. A second control locks the mechanism out so it cannot fire in a pocket by accident. On an automatic that safety is not a convenience feature, it is the difference between carrying it and leaving it at home.
The action fires crisply and the lock engages with no play, which we test on every automatic knife before it is photographed.
Blade length is 1.25 inches with the full 1.25 inches as cutting edge, because a trapezoid utility blade is edge from heel to point. That is a short blade doing the work it was designed for rather than a compromise.
Brass That Will Not Stay New
The chassis is brass, machined and finished by hand. Brass is a working material rather than a display one, and it behaves accordingly.
It oxidises. Handled regularly it darkens, picks up the marks of use, and settles into a tone that belongs to whoever carried it. Left alone in a drawer it will do the same thing more slowly. Some owners polish it back periodically; others never touch it.
Either is correct. What matters is knowing before you buy that this surface is not fixed, which is the same conversation worth having about the carved copper on the Blackside Plan B.
At 3.3 ounces in a three inch closed package, the density is the point. Brass gives a small object a weight in the hand that aluminium never will.
The Abalone Scale
Set into the brass on one face is abalone shell. The blue, green and violet come from the shell’s own structure rather than from any dye or coating.
Abalone is nacre, built in microscopic layers by the animal. Those layers are close enough in thickness to the wavelength of visible light that they split it, which is why the colour moves as you turn the piece rather than sitting still on the surface.
No two pieces of shell are alike, and the figure on this one runs in vertical bands from deep blue through green. The reverse face is left as plain brushed brass, which is a sound decision: one side is the jewellery and the other is the tool.
There is no pocket clip. A small lanyard hole is machined at the butt.
Condition and What’s Included with This Miroc Razor Knife
This knife is new. It came to us direct from the maker, it has never been carried, and there is nothing on it to grade down. You can check that against our published standards.
It ships in a felt carry pouch. There is no certificate and no box, which is normal for a piece at this price from a one-man workshop, and we would rather say so than let you find out.

Video Description
The Miroc Razor Knife OTF Automatic Custom is a new brass utility knife in unused condition. The chassis is machined brass with an abalone scale set into one face and plain brushed brass on the other. It measures 4.25 inches open and 3 inches closed, at 3.3 ounces. Miroc made it in August, 2026.
The blade is a Stanley 1992 standard high carbon steel utility razor blade, laser etched, 1.25 inches with the full length as cutting edge. A side button fires the blade out the front and a separate lockout prevents accidental deployment. It fires crisply and the lock engages with no play. There is no pocket clip, and a small lanyard hole is machined at the butt. It ships in a felt carry pouch.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Miroc Razor Knife a custom knife?
A custom is a unique, handcrafted tool designed and built by an individual artisan rather than stamped out in a factory. Every detail, from the choice of material to the shape of the chassis to the inlay, is tailored by hand and with the help of specialized machinery.
That applies here in a specific way. The brass is machined and hand-finished, and the abalone in this one exists in no other piece, because shell figure cannot be repeated. What is not custom is the consumable: the blade is a hardware store standard, and that is deliberate.
Where do I get replacement blades, and what does that cost?
Anywhere that sells tools. It takes the Stanley 1992, the standard two-notch trapezoid utility blade, sold in packs of five or a hundred at any hardware store for a few dollars.
That is the argument for the whole design. On a conventional knife a dull edge means stripping the knife down, working a stone, or sending it out for a regrind. Here you swap a blade in seconds and the object you paid for is untouched. A knife you will not hesitate to use on cardboard and packing tape is worth more in practice than one you protect.
Is an automatic utility knife legal where I live?
That depends entirely on your location. This is an automatic knife: a button releases a spring that drives the blade out. The fact that it takes a utility blade does not exempt it from automatic knife law, and buyers sometimes assume it does.
Laws vary by state, county and municipality. The notice at the foot of this page links to a current state-by-state reference. We do not give legal advice and the buyer is responsible for knowing the law where they live.
Why does abalone shift colour when I move it?
Because the colour is not a pigment. Abalone is nacre, which the animal builds in microscopic layers, and those layers are close in thickness to the wavelength of visible light.
Light striking the surface reflects off several layers at slightly different depths, and the reflections interfere with one another. Which wavelengths survive that interference depends on the angle you are looking from, so the colour changes as the piece turns. Nothing is coated and nothing can rub off, though the shell is softer than the brass around it and will scratch first.
Will the brass tarnish, and should I stop it?
It will, and that is normal rather than a defect. Brass reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, darkening and taking on a patina that records how it has been handled.
You can polish it back with any brass cleaner whenever you like, or leave it and let it go dark. Collectors split evenly on this. What is worth avoiding is polishing hard across the abalone, which is considerably softer than the brass and will dull under an abrasive.
