Hawk Deadlock 20CV: A 2022 Model C Double-Action OTF
This Hawk Deadlock 20CV is a Deadlock Model C, engraved with its 2022 build year is offered to you in excellent condition. Grant and Gavin Hawk designed the Deadlock so a double-action OTF locks open with zero blade play. Here the blade is a 3.5 inch double-edge dagger in CPM 20CV. The frame is Titanium, with classic woven Carbon Fiber inlays on both sides.
It came to us from a small collection, and it is in excellent condition. Our earlier Deadlock Model C in blue Carbon Fiber and Titanium carried an M390 blade. This one carries CPM 20CV instead, and its inlays are the classic Carbon Fiber weave. For marbled blue Fat Carbon on the same Model C, see our Hawk Deadlock Fat Carbon from 2025.
John Wick and the Hawk Deadlock Model C
The G&G Hawk Deadlock Model C secured its legendary status when it made its cinematic debut in the global blockbuster John Wick: Chapter 4. Recognized worldwide as an elite tactical OTF automatic, this zero-blade-play masterpiece perfectly matched the precision of the assassin underworld. Of all of the knives available in the world, the production crew wanted only the best for John Wick. They chose the Hawk Deadlock, and you can too.
Grant and Gavin Hawk of Idaho City
Hawk Knife Designs is the father and son shop of Grant and Gavin Hawk, in the old mining town of Idaho City, Idaho. They began making knives in the 1990s. Rather than refine existing locks, they set out to invent new ones, and that became their signature.
Their mechanisms include the Hawk Lock, the RAM Safe Spin, the E.T. (External Toggle) and the Beetle. Production companies licensed their designs, among them CRKT, Kershaw, Böker and Quartermaster. Their Hawk Lock also runs under license on the NCC Ragnarok Hawk V7.
Grant Hawk died in November 2023, at 82. This Deadlock dates from 2022, when father and son still worked side by side. For another automatic from the same shop, see the Hawk Talon Auto in brightwashed M390.
How the Deadlock Removes Blade Play
Every OTF needs clearance inside the handle so the blade can travel. That clearance usually shows up as play once the blade is out. So for decades, collectors accepted a slight wobble as the price of an out-the-front automatic.
The Hawks patented their answer as US Patent 9,498,889, granted in November 2016. When the blade fires, a stop pin on the tang wedges against a stop plate cut at two angles. As a result, the blade locks in two planes at once, and it feels like a fixed blade in the hand.
The Model C is the third Deadlock. Models A and B were heavily built tactical knives that proved the mechanism. Then the Model C slimmed the platform down for everyday carry, and it kept the same lockup.
Hawk Deadlock 20CV Blade and Double Action
The blade of this Hawk Deadlock 20CV is a symmetrical double-edge dagger, 3.5 inches long and sharpened on both edges. CPM 20CV is a powder steel high in chromium and vanadium. As a result, it holds an edge well and resists corrosion. A stonewash finish covers the blade and hides handling marks.
A stepped Titanium thumb slider sits on the show side. Push it forward, and the blade fires out of the front. Then pull it back, and the same slider retracts it. That is the double action, and it sets the Deadlock apart from a single action OTF such as the 2001 Microtech Exodus, which you reset by hand.
Titanium Frame, Carbon Fiber and a Hinged Clip
The frame is Titanium, inlaid on both faces with classic woven Carbon Fiber. On the show side, an engraved Hawk logo sits near the butt above a small Carbon Fiber point. The clip side carries a fluted panel set into the Carbon Fiber.
The pocket clip is milled Titanium, and it carries the knife tip-down. A pin at the butt mounts it as a hinged lever. Grooves cut across the butt give the hand a firm hold. Along the edges of the frame, Hawk engraved DEADLOCK 2022 G&G HAWK and MODEL C PAT. #9498889 20CV.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an OTF knife?
OTF stands for out the front. The blade travels straight out of the end of the handle rather than swinging open on a pivot. On this Deadlock, one slider both fires the blade and pulls it back in.
Is CPM 20CV a good knife steel?
Yes. CPM 20CV is a powder steel with high chromium and vanadium, so it pairs strong edge retention with real corrosion resistance. It takes longer to sharpen than simpler steels, but it holds that edge far longer.
Is the Deadlock Model C a custom knife?
The Hawks machine and assemble the Model C in small batches in their own Idaho City shop. Each one is hand-tuned before it leaves, and dealers sell it as a shop custom. It is not a one-off, though, so collectors judge it by configuration and condition.
How does the Model C differ from Models A and B?
Models A and B were heavily built tactical knives that introduced the Deadlock. The Model C keeps the same zero-play lockup in a slimmer, lighter frame. At 5.2 ounces, this one carries more easily for everyday use.
What does G&G Hawk mean?
G&G Hawk stands for Grant and Gavin Hawk, the father and son behind Hawk Knife Designs. It is the maker’s mark engraved on this knife, beside DEADLOCK and the 2022 build year.
Is the Hawk Deadlock 20CV legal to own?
It depends on where you live. Laws on automatic and double-edged knives vary by state, county and city, so check your own before ordering. The Automatic Knife Legal Notice at the end of this listing points to current state-by-state information.
